What is LH and why is it important?

There are many tests that you’ll need to have before and during your IVF treatment. LH is one of them, but what is it and why is it important?

LH is short for Luteinising Hormone and is a hormone made by the pituitary gland in the brain. It helps to control your menstrual cycle. In the first half of your cycle, the hormone will rise, and when it peaks, an egg will be released from your ovary (ovulation).

Just like AMH and FSH, your LH level also helps to indicate your ovarian reserve and will also confirm the start of the menopause. Your LH level can be tested with a urine sample. If your result is too high, then it could indicate an ovarian problem. If it is too low, then it is likely there is an issue with the pituitary gland or hypothalamus (this can stop ovulation).

In men, a very low reading can be an indication of sperm production problems. If a man has a problem with his hypothalamus, then he may stop producing sperm altogether.

If you are considering fertility treatment, then we would recommend that you learn your LH level. The best day to do this is on day 3 of your cycle.
