When it comes to IVF there are many different tests that you’ll need to have carried out. One of these is TSH, but what is it and why is it important?
TSH is short for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone and is produced in the pituitary gland. This gland can be found at the base of your brain and in line with the top of your nose. It is vital for regulating your metabolism. TSH starts the thyroid gland in your neck, which then sends out 2 enzymes, T4 & T3. These enzymes manage the body’s energy .
If your TSH is normal, then it will help guard against infertility and conception problems. Having a thyroid level that is higher than normal indicates an underactive thyroid. This may result in implantation problems.
Should you discover that your thyroid level is lower than normal, then most likely it is overactive. Problems as a result of this include increased risk of miscarriage, irregular periods, and pregnancy complications, which can affect both mother and baby. The newly developed foetus is dependent on its mother’s thyroid function, as the hormones are required for brain development.
If you are considering fertility treatment, then our recommendation is to have your TSH level tested. The test should be carried out no later than day 3 of your menstrual cycle.
