Learning that you need to have IVF can be a very emotional experience. Many people are unsure of where to start, where to go, and what to ask. Here at Procreate, we have compiled a short guide to help you consider having IVF abroad.
- Your budget: When looking at the cost, remember to ask if the treatment price includes medication along with any tests or consultations at the clinic. You’ll also need to factor in flights, accommodation, and transport. Some clinics offer complete packages, while others work with hotels that offer their patients discounts. For transport, also check if you pay the driver directly or at the clinic.
- Treatment: Is your treatment readily available? For example, if you are looking to have an egg donor, will there be a donor available that meets your requirements (ethnicity, education level, etc.)? How long will you have to wait? Is the donor anonymous?
- Marital Status: Some clinics, by law, are not allowed to treat single ladies, and if you are in a same sex relationship, then marriage will most likely be a requirement. We recommend that you ask this question at the outset to avoid any disappointment.
- Age: Age restrictions will vary from country to country. Some will treat ladies up until the age of 49, others up until 55. If you are in the upper age limit, please ask your clinic if additional testing is required. Sometimes, this can delay the process.
- Number of visits: If you are having genetic testing, then you may be required to make more than one trip. If this is a requirement, are you able to fulfil it?
- Language: Does the clinic have bilingual staff, or will you need a translator? If communication is a problem, then who will organise the translator, and is there an additional charge?
