What is AMH?
AMH stands for Anti Mullerian Hormone . The test measures the amount of AMH in your blood. It is a good indicator of your ovarian reserve (the remaining number of eggs that you have left). It can also help you to understand when to expect the onset of menopause.
Your level
Your AMH level helps to predict your response to IVF medication and is also required to help set your medication dosage (together with your BMI). This is why it is one of the most important tests that you can have.
If you have a high AMH, there is a chance that your ovaries may overreact to the medication. This response is known as OHSS ( Ovarian Hyper-Stimulation Syndrome). Your clinic will do its upmost to prevent OHSS.
If your level is too low, your ovaries may not respond at all. This is when egg donation may be recommended, or your doctor may recommend multiple egg collections.
How do I learn my AMH level?
To learn your AMH level, you’ll need to have a blood test. Fortunately, this can be carried out at any time; it doesn’t have to be on a particular cycle day. Many clinics can help with this, or if you’re brave enough, you might want to have a testing kit sent to your house. This often works out a lot cheaper than going to a clinic.
Please make sure that you have your test carried out just before you decide to start planning for treatment. Our advice is to make sure that the test is no more than 6 months old. As you get older, your AMH level will start to drop. The test that you had carried out a year or two ago will not be relevant today.
