When you finally decide that IVF is right for you, the next step is finding a fertility clinic. Choose one where you feel comfortable and can place your trust. After all, they will be with you on an intimate journey. It’s sometimes emotional, so it’s important to find the right match for you.
Here at Procreate, we know that patients are always full of questions and concerns. However, like any meeting or consultation, you often leave thinking, “Oh, why didn’t I ask x question?” That’s why we have decided to compile a list of “13 crucial questions”.
1) Is there an age limit? This will vary from country to country. Some countries will require older ladies to have extra tests. They may even need a letter from their GP to say that they are fit to carry the pregnancy.
2) Does the price you have quoted include medication or any tests at the clinic? Some will offer free scans or consultations.
3) What are the required tests, and can the clinic recommend anywhere? It is worth asking for recommendations, as patients will tend to use the same testing facilities. Your own fertility clinic may have an arrangement in place where you can get discounted or priority service at such places.
4) Can my medication be shipped? This is an important question; in places such as North Cyprus, the shipping of medication is not possible. It is mainly European countries that can offer shipping. Ask your clinic if they have a pharmacy that they work with in your home country.
5) What are the side effects of the medication? When asking this, please remember that each patient is different; some experience side effects, some do not.
6) How long is the process from start to finish? You’ll need to know this for planning.
7) Can I complete everything in one trip? Some treatments require multiple trips.
8) Do you recommend genetic testing such as PGD or NGS? This is important for older ladies or anyone with genetic conditions that could be passed on.
9) What are the clinic success rates? You’ll need to ask for the latest live birth and clinical pregnancy rates.
10) What are the chances of my own success? The clinic will need your AMH, AFC, and semen analysis. Do not worry if you haven’t prepared them. They can be sent at a later date.
11) Can you help with travel arrangements and accommodation? Most clinics will offer airport transfers as well as transport to and from the clinic. They will also work with hotels that offer their patients discounts.
12) How many embryos can you transfer? Some clinics may not wish to transfer any more than two to avoid selective reduction.
13) Will it be a fresh or frozen transfer? Each clinic has its own preference.
